An amputation on a patient is a devastating outcome, for the patient, the family, and the physician.
50 percent or more will die within five years of an amputation, due to multiple reasons--the least spoken about is depression. We, the healthcare community, HAVE TO do a better job of preventing this. It was my privilege to present to the largest priary care eeting this year the ACP in San Diego, and my topic was exactly this--how do we detect, peripheral arterial disease and prevent limb amputations in patients that primary care physicians see in their office routinely.
I shared with primary care physicians how to evaluate risk factors, early diagnosis, and early vascular strategies, including medication’s and exercise can help prevent this terrible state.
